How to Simply Identify Feed Yeast?

1. Yellow color does not necessarily mean high nutrition


Feed yeast emphasizes the comprehensiveness and balance of its nutritional components, and the depth of feed color has no direct relationship with its nutritional value. Among plant-based protein feeds such as yeast hydrolysate, soybean meal (cake) is light yellow in color and relatively good in both nutritional value and palatability. As a result, people tend to believe that a lighter yellow color indicates a higher soybean meal content and better quality. In contrast, rapeseed meal (cake) and cottonseed meal (cake) are darker in color and slightly less palatable, leading to the assumption that they are inferior. This is actually a misconception. In reality, as long as ingredients are scientifically and reasonably formulated, a nutritionally balanced feed can still be produced, costs can be reduced accordingly, and good economic returns can be achieved. Some feed manufacturers, in order to cater to this "color preference," add chemical pigments during production to pass off substandard products as high-quality ones, expand sales, and deceive consumers — a practice that livestock farmers should be wary of.


2. Strong fragrance does not necessarily mean good quality

The odor of feed yeast should primarily come from the inherent smell of the feed ingredients themselves. Adding appropriate amounts of flavoring agents such as flavor enhancers, sweeteners, umami agents, and salty agents to compound feed can improve palatability, stimulate appetite, enhance feed conversion rates, and promote livestock and poultry growth. However, these additives only change the physical characteristics of the feed and contribute little to the nutritional value of the feed yeast itself. If pursued solely for sensory appeal, excessive addition may cause certain toxic or side effects (such as salt poisoning) and may even affect carcass quality, reducing its commercial value.


3. Fishy smell does not necessarily mean fishmeal content

High-quality fishmeal ranks relatively high in nutritional value among animal-derived yeast hydrolysate protein feeds. It has a well-balanced amino acid profile, good palatability, and is easy to digest and absorb, making it an excellent protein feed. However, due to its limited supply and relatively high price, feed mills generally do not use it in large proportions. Instead, they add fish-flavored attractants such as fish aroma enhancers to impart a fishy smell to the feed. In other words, the intensity of the fishy aroma in the feed does not fully indicate the actual fishmeal content — a fact that users should clearly understand.


4. High protein content does not necessarily mean good feed

Protein is the most fundamental substance for life activities and an essential and important nutrient in feed yeast. An adequate amount of protein feed must be included in livestock and poultry rations to meet their growth and development needs. However, more protein is not necessarily better. This is because at different growth stages, the body's utilization efficiency of protein varies. If too much protein is supplied, livestock and poultry cannot convert all of it into body protein; instead, the excess must be metabolized through a series of physiological processes and eventually consumed as energy. This not only wastes protein feed but also places an additional burden on the kidneys, affecting the health of the animals — a loss rather than a gain. Especially given the current relative shortage of protein feed, it is even more inadvisable to add excessive protein feed to livestock and poultry rations.
